Why We Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
Estimated read time: 5 minutes
Breastfeeding is incredibly hard work!
And it is not talked about nearly enough. This also means that breastfeeding is not celebrated enough either.
At Titty City Design, we celebrate breastfeeding all year round. In fact, breastfeeding is the “Tits”-piration for starting this company. Over 300,000 people give birth each day and most do not have the support they need to breastfeed.
Our founder, Jessy, felt the same exact way and started Titty City Design while building a community on Instagram that normalizes talking about breastfeeding, communicating what our bodies go through, and especially celebrating all the long, tiring hours that go into breastfeeding.
We hope that through our unique gifts for new moms, we can help normalize and celebrate all breastfeeding journeys. Whether your breastfeeding journey is for 3 days, 4 months, a year, or longer... It is so important to acknowledge and celebrate your breastfeeding milestones and all the sacrifices you made to feed your child.
When is World Breastfeeding Week?
It is the first week of August. It starts on August 1th and ends on the 7th.
What is World Breastfeeding Week?
World Breastfeeding week started in 1992 as a global celebration to commemorate the Innocenti Declaration signed by policymakers to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.
The week is meant to highlight the importance of breastfeeding. This year the target audience includes governments, health systems, workplaces, and communities to be informed, educated, and empowered to strengthen their capacity to provide and sustain breastfeeding-friendly environments for families.
What is the theme of World Breastfeeding Week 2022?
This year is focused on strengthening the capacity of actors that have to protect, promote and support breastfeeding across different levels of society.
According to the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), this week is designed with 4 objectives in mind:
- Inform people about their role in strengthening the warm chain of support for breastfeeding
- Anchor breastfeeding as part of good nutrition, food security, and reduction of inequalities
- Engage with individuals and organizations along the warm chain of support for breastfeeding
- Galvanize action on strengthening the capacity of actors and systems for transformational change
How to Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week
Let’s unite and get the word out! Here are 8 simple ways you can celebrate!
- Celebrate your own breastfeeding journey and commemorate it with a keepsake to remind you how incredible you are.
- Cheer on a new birthing parent by simply texting them to check in and offer any support and encouragement. Even better, send them an encouraging gift and handwritten note to let them know how amazing they are doing.
- Reshare breastfeeding content on your social media
- Support organizations that are helping the cause
- Talk about breastfeeding with your family and friends (including birthing parents and non-birthing parents)
- Share your own experience – Trust us! This is super important! Birthing parents will benefit so much from you telling your stories.
- Reach out to your employers and ask how they support breastfeeding parents and how they plan to accommodate them.
- Demand action from your government officials for the support breastfeeding parents need including federal paid family leave, paid lactation support, paid childcare support, and paid mental health support for new parents.
