Behind the Scenes: Boards Across Hermosa 2023
Estimated read time: 10 minutes
Local South Bay Artists Unite
Over 100 local artists came together to paint and share their skateboard art with the theme, "Rock, Roll, Rebel: Hermosa" in local storefronts across Hermosa Beach.
Many of the artists were paired with local shops in downtown Hermosa Beach to display their hand-painted stake boards between January and March 2023. Jessy, creator, and artist behind Titty City Design, was paired with Curious workshop on Pier Avenue to showcase her skateboard entitled (you guessed it...), "Titty City."
All the boards created for Boards Across Hermosa will be gathered for an incredible "All Hands on Deck" display, at the State of the Art fundraising event to raise funds for Indivisible Arts, a non-profit that teaches youth creativity, consciousness, and connection through art. The event takes place on March 18th, and all of the skateboards will be at Resin in Hermosa Beach for their final viewing before they are awarded to the highest bidder.

The Making of "Titty City" Skateboard Deck
Last summer, Jessy started to get involved locally by joining HERmosa Circle and the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, which is how she learned about this opportunity to support her community in the South Bay. She's excited to share this journey with you.
This was Jessy's first project of 2023 and is grateful to Boards Across Hermosa and Indivisible Arts for the opportunity to feature her art in her local beach community. The theme of this project is "Rock, Roll, Rebel: Hermosa" and more on that in a little bit.
How it started
Jessy ordered a blank skateboard deck on Amazon, went to the local Home Depot and purchased some white primer spray paint and gloss, and got to work! This January was quite rainy so she had to wait for a clear day to spray paint my blank canvas.
It took a few days and had to wait between spays for it to dry 24 hours before painting her signature Titty City design.
Then the painting began! It took longer than expected, and to date, this is the largest canvas Jessy has ever painted.
"So my paint pen was too thin for the look I was going for so I ended up painting over each stroke 3-4 times... I finally got the look I wanted! And 4 hours later I still got quite a ways to go... That second clip was just a close-up of one section. This skateboard is a huge canvas for me!" - Jessy
"The one thing that worried me about this project was that the material is not forgiving. So messing up was not an option! It has taken hours and hours of practice to paint like this. It’s actually more difficult than it looks!" Jessy shared.
It took 2 weeks to complete and hundreds of Tits
The Big Reveal
Jessy revealed the final skateboard design on January 25th on Instagram.
"The top and bottom of the deck are complete! It is covered in SOOOO many hand painted ( . Y . ) Hours and hours later, it is ready to go on display in Hermosa Beach as part of a local art installation and auction. About halfway through this project, I seriously contemplated what I got myself into! This was my biggest canvas to date! And you know what... It was worth it!"

The Inspiration for the "Titty City" Skateboard Deck
As a feminist artist, Jessy wanted to honor the 2023 theme of Boards Across Hermosa by paying homage to Hermosa Beach local and Hall of Fame skateboarder, Cindy Whitehead.
The hand-painted skateboard deck titled, “Titty City,” is in honor of a Cindy Whitehead. Not only is she a pioneer of the sport in the 70s, with her long-lasting impact documented in the Smithsonian, but she also continues to carve space for girls and womxn in the male-dominated sport to this day.
The legendary, Cindy Whitehead gives back to womxn and girls in skateboarding through her movement Girl is Not a 4 Letter Word, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities, funding, and recognition.
"Keep on rocking, rolling, and rebelling!" - Jessy
